It’s no secret that I like to elevate my just-shy-of 5’6-stature with the help of a heel. Working as a magazine fashion editor gave me license to slip on shoes sporting a four or five inch heel—usually a platform or a wedge —nearly everyday. Which meant, when I dropped off my just-turned-seven-year-old daughter at school, I was often the lone “Amazon” teetering amongst a sea of sensible moms holding steady in their stylish flats.
Apparently, my daughter didn’t find high heels cool for school either. My first week after leaving the magazine, I picked her up wearing these shoes by Pretty Ballerinas. When she came out of the classroom, her face broke into a huge smile and she screamed “Mommy, you’re wearing flats!”
The more time that has passed since leaving my job, the more I find myself happily slipping into a pair of flats. And I have to admit, putting on a pair that have something special going on—a la these union jack and ode to punk rock ones—does elevate my mood as well as my style quotient, if not my height. But don’t get me wrong, I know these shoes aren’t inexpensive (and I promise, future blogs will feature fabulous shoes for the chic and frugal). But I think investing in a comfortable, well made shoe that is stylish, fun and instantly ups the ante of your look, is without question, worth it.
