I usually gravitate to our photo cameras instead of our video cameras. I’m not sure why that is. I love watching family videos, but have never gotten into the habit of making them.
Luckily, my oldest son, Ralph, is obsessed with film making and has been for years. He carries a video camera with him almost constantly. He captures footage of scenery he might want to use in a future movie. He captures conversations among his siblings. He captures birthday parties and holidays. He captures our house in all states of cleanliness and mess. (Same goes for my hair.)
There are just certain things that still pictures can’t capture — like the record of Betty speaking French (with an excellent accent, I might add). She couldn’t do that a year ago!
I don’t know what will become of all Ralph’s footage, but I hope it becomes a simple record of what our family life is like right now. Something I can watch when the children are grown and I’m feeling homesick for my little ones.
How about you? Are you more likely to make videos or shoot still photos of family events? Or do you manage to do both?
