Style Icon: Zooey Deschanel; STEAL HER LOOK

zooey deschanel style

Do you have a celebrity style icon? Right now, I’m crushing hard on everything Zooey Deschanel wears — and not just on the red carpet or in every-day Zooey Deschanel life.

Specifically, I have a major style crush on Zooey’s character Jess in her hit TV show New Girl.

Each week I’m all, sorry, Jess, I can’t pay attention to your cute little quirks because THAT DRESS!

So I did some hunting and tracked down some of the clothes (and shoes and jewelry) that Jess has actually worn on the show. (Also? I pulled together some looks that Jess would totally wear, and that you can totally buy. You’re welcome.)

Take a look:

  • Doll in All Dress 1 of 20
    Doll in All Dress
Jess wore this exact dress in "Pepperwood," (season 2, episode 14) where she thinks one of her writing students might be plotting to kill her. Remember that one? She's wearing it when they're spying on him, and then slides under the car to get away, and Nick's all, "THAT'S RIDICULOUS! WHY WOULD YOU GO UNDER A VAN?" That dress.
    Buy from Modcloth, $294.99
  • J.Crew Majesty Peacoat 2 of 20
    J.Crew Majesty Peacoat
Most of the coats Jess wears in New Girl are by Kate Spade, but she's been seen in this Majesty coat as well. Good news! It's now on sale! (She actually wore this coat in navy and green, but don't you think the pink is so Jess?)
    Buy from J.Crew, $189.99
  • Kate Spades Jillian Striped Bow-Waist Dress 3 of 20
Kate Spades Jillian Striped Bow-Waist Dress
This is one of the many Kate Spade pieces she's worn on New Girl. This dress, in particular, was worn in the episode "Tomatoes" when she's having (a heated) dinner with her then-boyfriend Russell (Remember? Her student's father?) and Russell's ex wife.
Buy from Neiman Marcus, $153 (on sale!)
  • Cece Suede Ballet Flats 4 of 20
    Cece Suede Ballet Flats
Jess has worn these multiple times and in multiple colors — especially purple and red.
    Buy from J.Crew, $128
  • Shoreline Soiree Dress 5 of 20
    Shoreline Soiree Dress
Jess wore a similar dress in season 1's "Fancyman Part 2." The actual dress was made by Kate Spade (and no longer available), but this one is an incredibly close match.
    Buy from Modcloth, $77.99
  • Heart Shaped Sunglasses 6 of 20
    Heart Shaped Sunglasses
Along with the navy Majesty Coat, Jess wears these snazzy heart sunglasses in season 1's episode titled "Control."
    Buy from Fred Flare, $12
  • Kate Spade New York Womens Valley Ballet Flats 7 of 20
Kate Spade New York Womens Valley Ballet Flats
In addition to the J.Crew flats, Jess has also worn these striped Kate Spade shoes.
    Buy from Amazon, $150
  • Kate Spade New York “Leanna Silk Blouse” And she wore the striped 8 of 20
Kate Spade New York "Leanna Silk Blouse" And she wore the striped
And she wore the striped Kate Spade flats with this striped Kate Spade blouse. (See the full outfit on the New Girl set.)
    Buy from Nordstrom, $268
  • Collection Cashmere Bateau Sweater in Stripe 9 of 20
Collection Cashmere Bateau Sweater in Stripe
This J.Crew shirt (which Jess wore in the recent episode "Cabin") is now on sale — and probably won't be in stock for much longer!
    Buy from J.Crew, $149.99
  • What a Dahlia Dress in Straps 10 of 20
What a Dahlia Dress in Straps
This Bernie Dexter dress was worn in the episode "Eggs", where Jess and CeCe are contemplating their fertility.
    Buy from Modcloth, $155.99
  • Ted Baker London, LADI Full Skirt Belted Dress 11 of 20
Ted Baker London, LADI Full Skirt Belted Dress
  • Collection Cashmere Crewneck Cardigan 12 of 20
    Collection Cashmere Crewneck Cardigan
Jess wore this purple cardigan with this green dress in "Pepperwood." See the full outfit.
    Buy from J.Crew, $99.99
  • Tibi Anais Jacquard Cap Sleeve Dress 13 of 20
Tibi Anais Jacquard Cap Sleeve Dress
Recognize this dress? It's the one she wore at the Christmas party, where she's running from her then-ex Sam (the doctor), only to realize she wants to be with him at the end. She added a little sparkle bow belt to the dress, naturally.
Buy from Saks Fifth Avenue, $198 (on sale!)
  • Boy Shirt in Neon Gingham 14 of 20
    Boy Shirt in Neon Gingham
Jess wore this shirt in last night's episode "Table 34."

She also wore these earrings in episode "Table 34."
    Buy from Zappos Couture, $48

Jess is a big J.Crew fan for her casuals. All of these J.Crew pieces have been featured on New Girl, but have since sold out. But they just might help you replicate the looks. ALSO.....
  • Not on New Girl…YET. 17 of 20
    Not on New Girl...YET.
But here are some current J.Crew clothes that I could totally see on Jess.
    Shop all J.Crew
  • Not on New Girl…YET 18 of 20
    Not on New Girl...YET
Some of my favorite New Girl dresses are sold-out Anthropologie dresses. Because the dresses disappear with the seasons, it's difficult to snag an old Anthropologie dress. But these new dresses could just as easily be in Jessica Day's closet.
    Shop all Anthropologie dresses ($68 - $298)
  • Not on New Girl…YET 19 of 20

It's no secret that Kate Spade is a favorite on set. Here are some pieces from Kate Spade's newest collection that could so be seen on Jess.
Shop all new Kate Spade clothes ($128 - $628)

And if you're a fan of the retro-style dresses on the show, here's your ultimate source: Modcloth.
