When I was a little girl, the thought of waking up early, catching a school bus, sitting through lessons and enduring hours of homework was only made better by one thing: supplies for school. There’s something about crisp white paper, unopened books and the smell of pencil shavings that made me all aflutter. (Yes, aflutter. I said it.) I would label my supplies, gather them in my new backpack and strategically pick out my First Day outfit — as if the upcoming event was something to look forward to, rather than dread.
Although you can always send them off with standard “back to school” supplies, finding unique and smile-provoking alternatives can seriously soften the blow of a brand new school year. They might even get excited. And erasers are a necessary supply, yet surprisingly uncool nowadays. I mean, my pencil case was jazzed up with YIKES! (remember those?!) and other funky pencil toppers that we traded and collected. Why the sudden shift to boring standards? Luckily there are still options for cool trendsetters.

If we learned anything from Ring Pops and candy necklaces, it’s that anything is cooler if you can wear it. Your little lady can wear her bling around the playground and then whittle down the “diamond” size and cut as she works throughout the day. We bet it’s a trend that her posse will soon be begging their moms for. (Get it at Paper Source.)
Maybe the new trend will be erasers-that-look-like-food since they seem to be dominating the genre as of right now. If you’re going to go this route, why not be completely original with these handmade donut erasers from the Etsy shop ivyPINK?
The shop also sells pizza pies…
..and ice cream sundaes, all designed to smudge away mistakes for under $1.
But one of the most popular novelty erasers right now are the Japanese Iwako erasers.
All of their erasers — from animals (above) to food (below) — are so impeccably designed that I’d never want to make a mistake!
But I have to say my favorite might be these handmade “happy bean” erasers from the Etsy shop fiskandfern:
With a wide variety of colors, expressions and shapes, these little guys need to be in my son’s future back-to-school pencil case. Or maybe just on my own desk.
