With all of the heavy metals and formaldehyde found in many paints, safety is key when re-decorating your child’s nursery. In fact, according to the EPA, indoor air is three times more polluted then the fresh outdoor air and is considered one of the top 5 hazards to human health!
The problem with painting your nursery with regular paints, is that many of the formulas will release a low level of toxic VOCs in the air for years after application. There are many different options on the market, but thankfully, quite a few paint manufacturers have developed their own variety of non-toxic paints.
I’ve put together 3 of my favorite paints readily available nationwide.
Benjamin Moore is and always will be #1 in my book. The paints are excellent and they cover very well, so you won’t need as many coats as would using a different brand.
Natura (pictured above) is Benjamin Moore’s new VOC free paint. It is no scent to this at all – completely odor-free. Natura offers excellent coverage, dries to the touch in 30 minutes and provides a mildew resistant finish. Priced at $50 per gallon.
Aura is a low VOC paint and is ironically the best paint available through Benjamin Moore. I was able to paint my daughter’s room, using just one coat, so it also saved me quite a bit of time. The only catch is the price. One gallon will set you back $57.00.
Sherwin-Williams Harmony is another zero VOC paint made by yet another popular paint manufacturer. You would need two coats with this one, as the coverage isn’t as good as with the Aura or Natura. Not a high-end paint, but a great pick if you are looking for something in the mid-range. Priced at $39.00.
Have you ever tried low VOC paint or zero VOC paints? Would love to hear your thoughts, and comments!
