6 Bike Safety Tips for Kids

By Lori Garcia |

May is National Bike Month! This national program, sponsored by the The League of American Bicyclists was launched to celebrate the many reasons we ride.

With my son participating in National Bike Month’s Bike to School Day on Wednesday, May 9th, I’ve had bike safety at the forefront of my mind. According to KidsHealth, approximately 300,000 children find themselves in the Emergency Room for bicycle-related injuries annually. Thankfully there are lots of ways we as parents can help reduce bicycle-related risks with our children.

This video offers a quick rundown of bike safety tips from pediatrician Lewis First, MD, chief of Vermont Children’s Hospital at Fletcher Allen:

LOVE this. Thank you! My family bikes a lot, and it drives me crazy that many people (not just parents) I know seem to think that bicycle safety=helmet and that is the end of it. This covers all the important stuff, and the hand signal link is wonderful!
