A Basket of Awesome

Many years ago, I bought my son a cape because he had just started showing interest in superheroes. It wasn’t especially pricey or anything, but it didn’t matter. He LOVED it. He wore it all the time and it just brought out his imagination in a way that I had yet to experience.

It gave me the idea that having some dress up clothes would be a great way to bring him and his sister hours of fun.

So, I found myself a big basket that I would eventually come to name - The Basket of Awesome!

Slowly, I started to add to it by hitting up stores just before or just after Halloween, when costumes and accessories would be reduced and on sale. I would buy costumes for both kids, that I knew they would have fun with at home, regardless the time of year.

Our basket of awesome contains both boy and girl stuff and it is played with every day. I love to see what they come up with. So what’s in there?

  • capes
  • masks
  • wands
  • lightsabers
  • tutus
  • wings
  • many, many different hats (firemen, soldier, policeman, etc)
  • costumes – Batman, Indiana Jones, Butterfly, Witch, Cowgirl, Harry Potter, etc
  • Scarves, Bandannas, Gloves, Belts
  • Glasses

I also keep some face paint at home, so that I can draw cat whiskers, or scars or whatever the play of the day seems to be. Having a basket of awesome guarantees hours of fun, while they use their imaginations and creativity. Of course, both I and their Daddy get in on the fun too.

Besides, what’s better than seeing your husband wearing a tutu?

The Basket of Awesome – it’s a good thing.
