Our baby, Charlie, turns 4 today.
He came to us at a tumultuous time. I had lost my job in the summer before he was born, and found one 600 miles away. I started in December 2009, just days before Charlie was to be born. That meant quick plane trips back and forth, and my wife having to live in my parents’ basement for a few weeks until we all got moved out.
It wasn’t easy, but we did it.
Now, here we are 4 years later with an amazingly energetic, crazy little kid. His stature doesn’t match his brother’s. My dad, at 5’6″ is the tallest in his family of 9. Charlie has that gene. This morning, when we measured him, he just scraped past where Zacharie was at 3. But size isn’t stopping this guy from anything.
He’s determined, wild, focused, smart, flirty, demanding, and, well, pretty much anything any other 4-year-old could be described as.
Here’s a look back at Charlie’s 4th year.

Flying a plane is old hat for this kid, who was on one moving away when he was just a few weeks old.

We both had such a scratchy throat and fever this day. Still, Charlie asked to go out for a library date and pulled a huge smile when we were reading books - still, one of his most favorite things to do.

The original Batkid, Charlie was a superhero when he had to go in for inguinal hernia surgery. Many parents are experiencing much more dramatic hospital visits, I know, but when your baby is under general anesthetic, nerves will always fray. His favorite pajamas brought smiles to everyone in the OR that day.

Every May, we go and visit Thomas The Tank Engine when he comes to visit our local train park. Every year, Charlie screams or scowls that Thomas is too loud. He DEMANDS that we all go each year, and then NEVER smiles for the picture. lol.

Charlie creates all sorts of silly things. This, is a Bum High Five. The concept is quite simple, when something great happens you squat down and slap bums.

This is Charlie's Race Face. Before a local cycling club took over the downtown streets for a criterium race, they opened up the course for kids to take a spin. Charlie blasted on his training wheels with the biggest smile ever.

September brought Charlie's face on the back of Cheerios across Canada for the second time. It was a joyous celebratory occasion (with a touch of scandal). Bragging rights for the Chooch!

We have had a new friend visit us this year. His name is Mouse, he is Charlie's imaginary friend. On September 27, Mouse turned 9. And we had a birthday party for him. Because of course.

Charlie loves to bake and will always hop up on a stool to crack eggs, add sprinkles, or mix things up. On this day we made a very easy, kid-friendly banana bread (his favorite treat).

It was Charlie's idea to get all dressed up in silly outfits and pretend we were in Hawaii, despite the freezing temperatures and two feet of snow.

Charlie finally asked to go skating this year after many offers and denials in winters past. And he took to it like a champ. He pushes that aid with abandon and I'm sure will be flying solo by spring.

Balloons and cake end the day. No, we don't go Pinterest crazy with fondant in this home. We've tried and failed miserably. Instead, it's a local boutique bakery cake with figurines du jour on them. When he was 2 it was Cars. 3 was Star Wars. 4 is Power Rangers. Happy Chooch Day, everyone!
