I always think it’s funny when my kids have friends over to watch movies. My kids start spouting off the titles of old movies and their friends just stand their looking dazed and confused, saying, “We don’t know that movie.” And honestly, I don’t know why they would know half of them. It shocks me sometimes to see my kids pop in an old musical instead of watching, “Despicable Me” or “How to Train Your Dragon.” It seems that kids would choose the latest and greatest blockbuster hit over some oldie, but for some reason, they love the old-time classics. I guess that part of me has been passed down to them.
I was raised in a very musical home. My Mom has the voice of an angel, along with every other member of my family. The angelic singing gene skipped me. Too bad. But I was raised to sing and play instruments and go to plays and be in plays and sing in choirs and watch musicals. That’s what we did. Whenever we needed a new musical to watch, we would head to the library and thumb through the classics that my mom loved and grew up with herself. They usually starred Doris Day, Frank Sinatra and Gene Kelly. Who knew that 3 generations later, those same movies would still be going strong?
Narrowing my list of classics was not an easy task. I have 50 more I’d like to add! And “classic” is different for everyone. Meghan compiled her own list of classics here.
So, here is a list of “classics” that I grew up watching that my kids love to watch too. Oh the memories that are flooding through me right now…
Any of these your favorites? What would you add to the list?
