Finally Five: A Bittersweet Birthday Celebration

Yesterday was Anders’ fifth birthday party which turned out to be completely worth the hours I spent on my hands and knees scrubbing the baseboards in our bathroom and kitchen. It was even worth the 30 minutes I spent scouring caked-on chicken nugget grease and tomato soup splatters from the walls of our microwave. (Perhaps, I should re-evaluate my housekeeping habits in this new year. Moving on.)

We hosted the party at our home. It was, of course, super hero themed and Anders wore a mask from a Batman costume from his second Halloween for the predominance of the party.

When it was time to sing happy birthday he smiled, he blushed, he covered his ears and he giggled. He is shy and uncomfortable being the center of attention like his mother. We had cake. We opened gifts. We even packed up our little entourage of five kids and paid a visit to the place where germs go to thrive — a pay-to-jump room of inflatable bounce houses.

I wanted to share a few of my favorite photographs from the celebration with you.

Anders is one of five grandchildren, four of which are boys.

I tried to convince him to take the mask off for pictures. He refused. I suppose the photos will accurately reflect what this stage in his life was like.

Anders' little sister, Danica, is just shy of three. She was just as excited as Anders for his big day.

It is so rare to get a shot of all five of them together and looking at the camera. Cake is an excellent motivator.

I'm not sure if he was just embarrassed or our singing caused him physical pain, but he covered his ears for the duration.

Anders added even more batman paraphernalia to his arsenal.

We may have contracted the flu, but the kids had a blast. Early bed times were enjoyed later that night by all.
