Bill Clinton says he didn’t inhale.
George W Bush was arrested for a DUI and allegations of cocaine use followed him throughout his presidency.
Barack Obama admitted he “tried drugs enthusiastically.“
Voters in Colorado and Washington State have voted to make the recreational use, and possession of, marijuana legal.
So, with past Presidents admitting to some dabbling, and it now becoming legal, how do you talk to your kids about drugs?
Marinka tackled this very topic a few months back when her 11 year old kid popped up and said “Hey Mom, have you ever tried drugs?”
Marinka mentions reading the Time To Talk website which offers the following answer to that tough question:
“Everyone makes mistakes and trying drugs was one of my biggest mistakes ever. I’ll do anything to help you avoid making the same stupid decision that I made when I was your age.”
But now that governments are making the use of recreational drugs legal, can we still call it a “stupid decision?” I mean, the President did it, and lawmakers are now allowing it.

Stacy Haight Connerty‘s 5 Tips On How to Talk To Your Kid About Drugs, has some insight that we’ve already started to implement when it comes to the dangers of smoking. My wife are explaining that it’s a horrible, awful habit, and it will kill you. I don’t think the leap to talking about drugs and their effects is too far from that.
The most important advice I will cling to as governments make these laws is: our family has it’s own rules. It’s the old “if Joe jumped off a bridge, would you?” routine that sounded so ridiculous when our parents said it, but makes so much sense now that we’re parents.
I will empower my kids with a strong moral compass that will help them make their own positive decisions for their life path.
