How Old Was Your Child When You Took Them to The Movie Theatre?

How Old Was Your Child When You Took Them to the Movie Theatre?I have been picky with the type of movies that I let my kids watch. I briefly chatted about it here before, that I like to know what my kid is watching before they watch it, which means I screen them first and give it the okay.

I like to make sure the movie doesn’t have too much violence in it, weapons shot at people, too many swear words and insults. It’s surprising how difficult it can be to find a movie that fits all of those criteria, especially now that my son, Speed is getting older and is interested less and less in the kid movies that are typically safe from those points.

Since he is making friends through school and is with boys his age all day, I have gotten this feeling that not a lot of other families are nearly as ‘strict’ with what their kids are watching as we are here.

His school library is a Star Wars theme — a movie I would not normally allow my 6 year old to watch, but we let the guard down and he quickly fell in love and became ‘obsessed’. Everything was Star Wars and I found that he was getting more interested in the laser play and all that so since we’ve stopped his viewing of the actual movie though do let him watch the Lego and cartoon versions.

Anyhoo — to the real point: My kid have asked to go and see a movie in the theatre and specifically are asking to see a movie that is not part of a typical franchise that I would let them go and watch — and while they have seen a movie at the theatre it was one of those franchise movies that I trust will not be too against the viewing points we have.

Movies do have the ratings on them, but from what I am seeing with other kids around the same age and what they’re all being exposed to, I worry that those ratings are still higher than what I would allow for my kids — so I have a bit of a conundrum. My kids are still kind of young at 6-years old, 5-years old and 3 and other than the fact I am not sure they could sit through a whole movie and not annoy the pants off everyone else, I worry about movie content…. but then I also worry if I am being too “strict”.
