How To Take Fun Family Photos With Flying Kids

My family pictures are about as wild as Instagram, Camera+, Hipstamatic, or any of seemingly a dozen other apps I have on my phone. I haven’t used my actual camera in 2 years. I’m addicted to taking a picture, editing on the spot, and sharing it or uploading it immediately. Even waiting 6 hours until we’re home after the day’s adventures is too much to ask.

But, if you want to spend some time, delay the gratification, and put some effort in to taking some fun family photos, you can come up with some great images with just a little bit of an investment. Just ask Justin Van Leeuwen. The father of 3 was recently featured in Flickr‘s The Weekly Flick, a blog series highlighting some of the photo sharing site’s more unique images.

Justin captures extreme, creative images of his wife and kids flying through the air, breakdancing on the ground, and anything outside the norm (like his toddler on the stove in a pot).

“I like creating fun and extreme images,” says the Ottawa native. While many people have staid family potraits, his kids will be flying through the air, and jumping from couches.

Not a lot of kids are going to have photos like that to show their friends, and I love it.”

Justin’s inspiration came from trying to create a family Christmas card photo when not everyone would be around at the same time because of busy schedules. So he shot everyone individually in the same room, layered it up in photoshop, and ended up with a great family portrait complete with flying infant.
