In Honor of #WRAD – 20 Great Books to Read Aloud With Your Kids

I grew up in a home filled with books. Not because my parents were big on reading but because my father worked in a book factory. We had every children’s book imaginable. And while we didn’t have a lot of money, seeing books on our shelves made me feel very rich. My parents worked so hard and so much that they didn’t have time to read with me. So my love of literature came about out of loneliness and boredom.

When my son Norrin was born, I knew I wanted him to love reading. These days, kids have so much to fill their days, they’re not likely to open a book if bored. I need to not only set the example for my son, but I needed to make it part of our everyday life.

March 6 is World Read Aloud Day and LitWorld is encouraging individuals to celebrate to Read it Forward by “reading aloud, giving away a book, or taking action in any way you can to Read It Forward on behalf of the 793 million people who cannot read.”

A book makes a wonderful gift, a good book can change a life.

Norrin can read most of the books in his little library on his own, but he still enjoys when I read to him and when we read togetherReading is how we best connect.

Click through this list – it features our family’s favorite books to read aloud. From dragons to princesses, Harlem to Paris, cookies to cake – there is something here for everyone.

What are your favorite books to read aloud with your kids? How will you Read it Forward?
