Although I enjoy her friendship, I don’t always agree with her. For instance, I received a “Friend Request” from her son a few weeks ago on Facebook.
Did I mention that our boys grew up together? They are the same age. Both boys are 9.
My son got his first computer (as a gift) when he turned five. He belongs to several online kid’s communities like Club Penguin and Monkey Quest. I have sat next to him several times and helped him figure out the community. I feel comfortable with these sites and the level of security on them.
But Facebook? Nine just seems too young to me to be on Facebook and Facebook happens to agree stating that the minimum age for an account is 13.
I am offended at the things that happen on there sometimes so I cannot even imagine what my child would do if he came across something offensive. Would he tell his mother or try to handle it on his own? I am just not sure a nine year old is equipped to deal with that. At least my nine year old isn’t.
My kids ride in carpool every day because my husband doesn’t want them exposed to the bus. Yeah, we are a little overprotective.
In case you are wondering, I accepted his “Friend Request.” I am curious because I know that my 12-year old nephew has been begging for an account and that my own son will be soon follow suit.
At what age would you let your child have a Facebook account?
