Every year, around this time, I start thinking about what my kids are going to wear for the upcoming holidays. Not because we have a super formal family and my kids have to have the perfect outfit for the festivities, but because I am a sucker for a little boy in a sweater, and being able to justify buying sweaters for my kids is thrilling.
You see, we live in Southern California, so our need for sweaters is pretty much nil. We can usually get by with a long sleeve shirt and, perhaps, a sweatshirt on those really cool mornings. Also, our family is really casual, so there’s no need to get dressed up for most of our gatherings.
Getting my kids something “fancy” to wear for Thanksgiving, and BONUS!, our holiday card photo, is on my list of most exciting things that happen every year. I realize how sad that makes me sound, but let’s just say that I’ve learned to enjoy the little things, shall we?
Anyway, over the years I’ve had a fantastic time coming up with adorable ensembles for my kids.
We used to live about a mile from a Target store, and I can tell you that I spent a ridiculous amount of time walking the aisles trying to decide what clothes to buy the boys. I wanted something cute and in-style, but still classic. I mean, I had to lot of people to make happy, including my 96-year-old Grandmother. I wanted clothes that coordinated, but weren’t too matchy-matchy. And I also needed clothes that reflected each kid’s unique personality – my oldest can pull off the preppy look, but my middle son has more of a rockstar personality.
It’s a lot of pressure, but I am always up to the challenge.
Things have become more difficult the last two years, because we moved away from my beloved Target. Now I have to plan a trip to the closest store, which is a good 40 minute drive from my house. I love looking at the website for inspiration, but I prefer to make my final decisions in the store. I’m always up for a trip to Target, though, no matter how far the drive! Thankfully, my kids are still at the stage where couldn’t care less what they wear, so I’m still able to pick out their clothes without any complaints from the peanut gallery.
Just writing this all out has me excited about the prospects for this year’s outfits and accompanying photo op!
