Widespread hunger is typically associated with third-world countries, but hunger is a major problem at home, too. One in six Americans lives with hunger on a day-to-day basis. In 2010, one out of every five children lived in poverty. Feeding America provides emergency food assistance to an estimated 37 million low-income individuals no matter the month, but it expands its efforts around Thanksgiving. This year, the organization aims to provide Thanksgiving meals to 9 million Americans. 96 percent of donations go directly to the families that Feeding America serves, and, thanks to corporate partnerships, every dollar donated to Feeding America provides $15 worth of food to those who need it most.
How You Can Help: Donate money, food, or time. Feeding America also provides information on how you can start a virtual food drive in your area, launch a fundraiser in your workplace, or even donate stocks and securities.
