My Favorite Disney Memory

By Lori Garcia |

I consider myself seriously lucky to live less than 30 minutes from The Happiest Place on Earth.

For all the dozens of joyous times I’ve strolled through Main Street USA, one Disneyland trip remains my absolute favorite.

I gave birth to my second son in September 2007 and exactly one month later my eldest, Boy Wonder turned 5 years old. Life at home with a newborn was hectic and with Boy Wonder just starting kindergarten, I wondered if life would ever calm down. What I feared most was my 5 year old feeling like yesterday’s news as everyone swooned over his precious new brother.

My husband and I decided to surprise Boy Wonder with a very special 5th birthday at Disneyland - just the three of us.

We rode every ride, ate as much as our bellies could handle, went crazy with souvenirs, and took a billion pictures to immortalize Boy Wonder’s special day.

As blessed as we were to welcome a new baby into our loving family, the exhaustion and stress of new parenthood had gotten the better of all of us. But on this perfect day, the three of us let go and let the fun in. We played hard even as the clouds rolled in and the rain came drizzling down.

To this day, 9 year old Boy Wonder remembers his Disneyland birthday, of course the Mickey ears and framed picture above in his room doesn’t hurt either.

As for Boy Wonder’s baby brother, he’s turning 5 this September. In the grand tradition of fantastical 5th birthdays, we’re going to Disneyland to celebrate!

This brings back so many memories of when I was little and my parents took me to Disney! I wish I had taken more pictures. I need to go back…I’m sure I would have just as much fun

  2. Stella says:

This makes me go back DECADES [ssshhhh!] when I went to Disney as a little girl and met my idol: Ariel! It’s amazing to think that the same cherished memories I had as a little girl can be shared with my own kids today. Disney will always hold a special place in my heart–and my family’s!

  3. Louise says:

It’s funny, I went to Disney a bunch of times as a kid (and LOVED it, of course!) but like you my favorite memory is taking my kids, in my case, for the first time. Something about their wonder and amazement, and the fact that it reminded me of my own childhood experiences, made the happiest place on earth even happier!

Disney is sooo great anytime of your life – but i’ll never forget my first trip! my favorite part had to be the character breakfast! So fun to see all your favorites brought to life :)

  5. Amanda says:

I love that you gave your son your undivided attention on his birthday. I used to ask for that when I was a kid — my sister and I are only two years apart. My favorite Disney trip memory: I went on a tour of Universal Studios and my sister and I were chosen out of the crowd to recreate a scene from “Honey! I Shrunk the Kids.” There was a green screen, fan for windy effects, and everything.

  6. Robert says:

I’ve never been to a Disney theme park, but have always wanted to go! Hopefully I’ll make it with the kids soon :)

  7. Anelieze says:

My husband and I were just looking for a simple video camera to capture moments like those. My family has tried to take one trip a year together (out of state every other year, out of the country the rest) and I will always remember the fun time we had in Cancun! We have family there and I got to see my great-grandmother for the last time before she passed away. It was wonderful!

What a great birthday tradition! My oldest turns five in October, and although we don’t live anywhere near Disneyland or Disney world, this is encouraging me to plan a really special surprise birthday adventure for her this year, and maybe by the time my youngest (just born) turns five, we’ll be able to take our whole family to Disney!
