Our Greatest Gift Hits of Christmas, 2011

The 4 year old cousins trying out their new bikes from Santa

Now that we’re a few days past Christmas, and the wrapping paper is mostly all cleaned up, and the boxes have been sent away to the recycling place, I’m getting a sense for what gifts may be the biggest hits in our family this year.

Some years Santa really hits it out of the park, and I think this may have been one of those years. Everyone got some supercool gifts that they seem to really love, so I thought I’d share a few.

You will notice that I didn’t include any gifts for Jon in this little gifty roundup, and that’s because he asked that I not buy him anything this year for Christmas or for his birthday, which falls on January 10, and instead let him choose and buy a new Android tablet for himself. You see, he had a really cute 7 inch tablet that he loved…until a few weeks ago when Danger Baby sweetly toddled up to her Daddy,  grabbed Jon’s tablet off his lap, and in the blink of an eye, slung it across the room, shattering it. Jon was not amused, and he is now shopping the best price on a replacement.

Maybe I’ll add a photo of Jon with his new gadget when he gets it :-)

    How cool is this??!!
This is what my mother's beau, Jim surprised her with on Christmas morning. Isn't that a cool gift? It's vintage, and Jim had it refurbished and managed to get it into the house without her knowing so she could be surprised.

C asked Santa for a "princess bike," and NC requested a "polka dotted bike." Mr. Claus delivered on both counts.

    C's adorable new slippers
Santa brought these adorably luxe little slippers to C in her stocking. They're super soft and comfy, too.

This is what Jon got me for Christmas and I love it! Outdoor entertaining at Casa Hickju just got kicked up a notch.

The Most Special Gift This Year
My parents bought this little bench for my son Henry when he was just a toddler, and for the past 20 years, it lived in the yard of their house. Henry used to sit on it and watch the little frog that lived in my parents' pond, and his younger siblings and cousins loved it too. When my mother sold the family house last year, the little bench was by then just a rotten mess of wood and rusty metal. My mom's beau, Jim surprised me this year by totally refurbishing Henry's bench and making it like new again. This is incredibly special to me.

    What I Gave This Year
I used the photo-to-canvas service CanvasPop.com to have this amazing photo of Henry's name in Kathmandu turned into wall art for family members this year. They all really loved it.

    C and a New Friend
Four year old C looooooves small stuffed animals, so this little guy was one of her fave gifts from Santa.

G was soooo sick over Christmas Eve and for the past few days, so she's just now starting to pay any attention to the gifts she received, like this rocking hourse.

One of Santa's biggest hits this year has been this HUGE (like, 6 feet tall and 6 feet wide) pop up indoor playhouse that's supposed to be a little cafe. C and her cousin NC love that thing. In this photo, C is wearing the princess nightgown that was her special gift from her brother Henry this year (I choose and wrap a gift for each of the kids from Henry because he's not with us to do it himself), and NC is wearing the spangly "Hannah Montana dress" that she specifically requested of Santa.
  • Calico Critters 11 of 20
    Calico Critters
C asked Santa for Calico Critters and a house for them to live in, and as you can see, she must have been a very good girl this year.

Uncle Robert and Aunt Nicole gave all the kids in our family these awesome capes with their initials on them. Here's Super C wearing hers.

    Sometimes it's the little things...
E loves this little toy where you blow thru a tube and try to keep a little ball aloft.
  • J’s new boots 17 of 20
    J's new boots
Here are J and E, with J modeling her new boots, which I actually think might have been her favorite present. She also really likes the camera she got that has wifi so that she can upload pix to Facebook and Pinterest straight from the camera itself.

    E Checks Out San's Bounty
This is E, right after he came downstairs to see what Santa had left. He's inspecting his new set of golf clubs, and the big box over there on the left is a (still not assembled) combo air hockey and ping pong table. He was pretty psyched, and I have a feeling that the game table is going to be something the whole family plays with all the time.

This bracelet was my gift to my sweet J this year.
  • I love you to the moon and back 20 of 20
I love you to the moon and back
I boxed J's "I love you to the moon and back" bracelet up with a small copy of "Guess How Much I Love You," which I always used to read to her and her brothers together when they were small.
