Our Little Cafe Tradition

A few years ago, my husband started working longer hours. The earliest he would come home was around 7:30pm. I knew that having a picture perfect family dinner wasn’t going to happen that late in the day. My kids would be screaming, “AH! FEED ME NOW!”

So I invented The Little Cafe! After dinner, when my husband comes home, we have a small dessert together as a family. It gave us that time I was craving to talk about our day without starving my kids! But that’s not the best part. . .

The Little Cafe doesn’t open until the kitchen is clean! Just a little motivation to get my kids to scrub everything down after dinner. They will always get a dessert no matter what, but if they don’t help clean, I will cut their dessert in half. It’s their choice. They each have learned this the hard way a few times. Even so, it’s still shocking when I hear them say, “Mom, what can I do next?”

Does your family get to have dinner together every night? With work schedules and after school programs, it’s hard to find the time. Creating your own little cafe might give your family a chance to sit down and be together at the end of the day.

Here’s 6 easy ways to help you transform your kitchen into a cafe every night!

Most of the time I keep it simple and just serve milk or water at The Little Cafe, but if I want to get a little more fancy, I make hot chocolate.

    The Extras: Fancy Glassware
I found these glasses for $6.99 at Ross and had to have them! It's made our cafe seem a little more real. One of my kids (Owen!!) already dropped one! One down, seven more to go!
If you can't find these glasses at Ross, Buy a set (or two!) of Irish Coffee Glasses from Amazon

    The Extras: Dessert Plates
I love this dessert plate. If you look close you can see cats prancing around the flowers. Without the cats, the plate might look too stuffy. Instead it looks quirky!
Buy a few dessert plates at Urban Outfitters.

    The Extras: A Tablecloth
Isn't this tablecloth amazing? It would make the night feel so special. Think of the memories this tablecloth would have and the stains to prove it! Ha! I'm so tempted to buy it. Do you think I would regret it?
    Find it at Anthropologie.
  • The Extras: Dessert Spoons 6 of 6
    The Extras: Dessert Spoons
Best part about this set? Each spoon can be personalized. I would have so much fun thinking of what to put for each person. Owen's spoon would say: Don't drop me! Love that it comes in a set of five. Perfect for my family!
Buy this set of spoons at Etsy.
