So there’s this “controversial humor” page on Facebook called “12 year old slut meme’s.” If it looks like it was titled by 12-year-olds, that’s because it was created by two 19-year-old Australian boys named Dom & James, or at least that’s what the admins would have you believe. I have no reason to doubt the veracity of that assertion, because the “humor” on “12 year old slut meme’s” is about as fratty and juvenile as it comes. (My concern about the page’s admins? That Dom & James are really Daniel Tosh.)
Anna North reported on BuzzFeed this week that Facebook has refused to take the page down despite complaints and even a Change.org petition, because the social networking site maintains that the page is a “clear attempt at humor or satire.” As such, they will not take it down, even though they admit it may “otherwise be considered a possible threat or attack.” Facebook’s guidelines add that they will not remove satire, including “content that many people may find to be in bad taste.”
The page is clearly in bad taste, and not only that, the “jokes” are poorly executed. They are in fact, not “jokes” at all, but the fratty mocking of young teenage girls who are trying to look or act “sexy,” or in some cases who are in the overly dramatic throes of puppy love. (Note: Since yesterday, most of the photos of actual young female Facebook users have been taken off the page, it appears by Facebook itself.) Often the girls being mocked on the page clearly aren’t even trying to look sexy (or as Dom & James would have you believe, “slutty”), but are simply wearing clothes that are ill-fitting (read: too tight in the boobs) or laying in innocent positions that are being sexualized by their tormentors. Sometimes, yes, the things being posted by young girls are in fact alarming, but because they’re a sad attempt at gaining some attention and much needed love, not because these children are “sluts.” Ugh.
The question, regarding this page in particular, is not whether or not it’s “okay” to mock these young girls, because Facebook has clearly decided to protect the rights of these young men to express themselves. But I feel quite confident in saying that these young men don’t have permission from the young female users to re-purpose their photos or statuses as “comedy” content, and since these girls are not public figures, the page admins must be in violation of either Facebook’s privacy rules, intellectual property rights or guilty of copyright infringement, even if the photos and statuses being re-purposed were originally set as “public.” If these girls really are 12 as the page admins are suggesting, then they are in violation of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act, which states that “any identifiable information that is posted on the internet must be posted by the parent or the person must have obtained VERIFIABLE CONSENT prior to posting identifiable information about any child under the age of 13.”
But because Facebook has refused to take the page down, the page admins have been adamantly cocky about their rights to do what they’re doing, posting statuses like:
The amount of people threatening to:
-Take us to the police
-Send us to jail
Is fucking ridiculous, girls; you do not realise that it’s a bit silly to complain when your photo that you put in a public place, goes PUBLIC.
Take us to the police, if they have nothing better to do than this then I’m sure they’re regretting becoming a police officer and being bitched to by children.
You put something on Facebook, you no longer own it.
Sometimes it pays to read the fine print. In short, shut your fucking mouth and accept you’re the one that put up that slutty photo, regret and forget, you fucking moron.
Slut shaming. How charming. Interestingly, Dom and James offered links to their Facebook pages in a status, as well. Dom works at a bakery – “Making coffee’s and shit like that” because he “gets free food” – and James’s page is currently not found. Wonder why! I bet his girlfriend stopped banging him or his mother ripped him a new one. Either way, I hope someone posts a pic of him crying like a little bitch!!! (That’s the 19-year-old male equivalent of being a 12-year-old slut, yes?)
At any rate, the page is still up for now, and here’s a sampling of what it has to “offer.” I’m only sharing the memes they’ve created. There are still some photos of girls on their page if you want to see them.
