Presidential Photostream: When It Comes to Kids, He’s Just Like Us

You can view President Obama’s year in photos through Flickr’s White House photo stream. It’s a pretty amazing archive and behind-the-scenes look at the president’s life.

I was drawn to the many photos of the president with children. I know kids and politicians always make for great photo ops, but for me seeing the way the way the Obamas relate to their own children and the children of this country underscores an important milestone for me: the President is only 10 years older than me. His children are very close in age to my oldest two kids. It actually feels kind of weird.

President Obama is the first president I relate to more as a peer rather than as a crusty old authority figure. I think this means, mostly, that I am getting old. But it makes the president extremely relateable to me. I know we have certain things in common by virtue of the fact that we’ve got kids the same age who our decisions affect—his maybe a little more than mine.

It’s always a treat to sneak a peek into lives more glamorous than our own. But when it comes to kids, it looks like the president and the first lady are just like us!

    He Gets Wet Kisses
Not even the president can dodge a sloppy, wet kiss from a little boy on the South Lawn at a Congressional picnic. Been there. Done that. Well, not on the South Lawn. But I've swapped spit with my fair share of toddlers.

This little girl, the daughter of a White House staffer, keeps the president on his toes as they run circles around his desk in the oval office. The OVAL office. Can you imagine how many times around and around and around you'd have to go?

Spider-Man Shoots Fake Webs At Him
This is President Obama's favorite photo of the year and I adore it too. The 3-year- old Spider-Man was trick-or-treating or-treating for an early Halloween with his father, White House aide Nate Tamarin. In this moment I can't think of a mom, dad, kid, or super hero who wouldn't vote for the president.
