Readers Reply: The Most Offensive Thing Ever Said To Me While Out With My Kids Was …

By Devan McGuinness |

A couple of weeks ago I shared a post of the dumbest things people have said to me while out with my kids. I believe that people open their mouths before they think and may not realize that what they are asking is well, inappropriate.

I had started to wonder if there was something about ‘me’ that seemed to encourage people to speak before they think when I am out with my kids. Was it my age? The amount of kids I have with me or what?

Once you all started to chime in with the dumbest things said to you while out with your kids, I started to realize … people just might not realize what they are saying.  Babble’s Facebook page asked our readers to spill the beans and tell us the most offensive thing ever said to you.

“Are you done?” (I have seven children.)

This just amazes me. A friend with nine children told me to reply with “Well, we are at least half done” just to stop people in their tracks. I just don’t understand when it comes to families why everything is suddenly everyone’s business.

The other comment I would add: “You don’t have seven kids, because your stepson doesn’t count.” It isn’t dumb, it is ignorant and offensive. This one drives me crazy… but that’s why I blog about it.

  2. Genevieve says:

The comment made to the lady with spina bifida is offensive, as is the comment made about a daughter being adopted and asking if your children shared the same father? The rest..not so much,

  3. Olga says:

    1) “Are you the au-pair?” I look much younger than I really am and I get this sort a lot. Another version of this is :”You look too young to be a mother of 2″.Oh really.
    2) “Are you trying for a third child so that you can have a boy?” What’s wrong with having 2 girs? I think it’s awesome!
