Saturday Morning Breakfast: The Perfect Time for a Treat

Saturday mornings may be my favorite time of the week. There are no meetings to rush off to, no frantic searching for matching socks, and clean pants. We don’t have to pack backpacks and tear the house apart looking for a lovey lost in the night. It’s just the four of us, lounging around in our pajamas, basking in our laziness.

Breakfast together is a must. Since there are no time limits on the preparation, we usually go all out — eggs, bacon, biscuits, hash browns. My husband is the chef in the family, but since he was sick this past Saturday the kids were stuck with me and my limited cooking ability.

They looked a little disappointed when I told them we weren’t going to have the pancakes their dad promised them earlier in the week, but they quickly perked up when I told them we were going to have donettes for breakfast and, even better, we were going to decorate them.

We got out green icing and colored candies and we turned those chocolaty frosted devil’s donettes into what Anders declared were tiny Christmas wreaths. At the end of our little donette decorating party we were sticky and giggling when my husband finally made his way into the kitchen. The kids were excited to show him the special Christmas breakfast they made and I was excited because I didn’t have to use a stove.
