Super Bowl, Super InvolvementCasey Mullins
The Super Bowl is coming to Indianapolis in less than 2 weeks. Downtown is a flurry with activity and preparation in order to host 150,000 fans over the next week. One entire street in downtown Indy has been lined with heaters and a zip line has been hung in front of the capitol building. The city will be full of concerts, events, celebrities, sports fans and media who will hopefully spend lots of money and leave loving this city as much as I have come to love it.
I’ll be involved in some of the events around town, mostly with photography, and it gets me so excited to be able to show Addie what I do. She sees me behind a computer so much of the time and since I don’t really have an office outside my couch she has a hard time imagining that what I do is work. There are very few occasions that I get to bring her along on assignments but this one has to be one of the best because I know she’ll actually remember it.
Two years ago I had a media pass that allowed me onto the track during the Indy 500. While Addie didn’t come for the actual race (too loud and hot) she did come for one of the qualifying races (which she also deemed too loud and too hot.) I’m not sure she’ll remember the day entirely (aside from too loud and too hot) but I’ve saved my lanyard and credentials hoping that someday she’ll see what I do as cool. I also have media credentials from the Indiana State Fair, several concerts and the Mecum Auto Auction.
I took Addie downtown when Barack Obama stopped off in Indy on a whim while on the campaign trail. I just asked her about it and she doesn’t remember it but I have photos that prove she was there. I lived in Salt Lake City during the 2002 Winter Olympics and I wish I would have gotten more involved. Aside from walking downtown and trading a few pins at work I didn’t get nearly the experience I wish I would have.
Does Addie care about the Super Bowl? Nope. Neither do I really. But it is certainly a once in a lifetime experience and I’m not about to pass up the opportunity to be involved, and that I get to bring my little kid with me?
Truly the best job ever.
What’s the coolest thing you were ever involved with as a kid? Or the best thing you’ve ever been able to take your kids to?
