SURVEY SAYS! The Sex Lives of Parents - Are You Normal?

sex lives of parents surveyAs we get ready for Valentine’s Day this week, all sorts of attention will be paid to love and how we celebrate it. For parents, Valentine’s Day may be a welcome night away from the kids, or it may be just another Thursday. The odds are pretty even.

For the past number of weeks, Today’s Parent has been surveying their readers about the sex lives of parents and the results are in! 4500 people responded to the questions that allow us to crack the bedroom door open a little bit and compare notes.

Does sex matter? How often is “normal”? How many of us are cheaters? What about sensual aides?

Put the kids to bed, and then click through the questions and answers below to see how you and your spouse ‘measure up’.

  • How often would you like to have sex? 1 of 8
How often would you like to have sex?
The majority, 49%, would like to snuggle up "a few times a month." Only a 1/4 would like to play a few times a week, while the remainder are happy with it as often as when the clocks change.

  • Are you satisfied with your sex life? 2 of 8
Are you satisfied with your sex life?
Ah, yes. Counterbalancing expectation with reality. Only 1/4 of respondents were truly disappointed with the intimacy in their relationship. Most, 37%, were happy with how things play out, while 35% admit it is okay but needs improvement.

  • How often do you do it? 3 of 8
How often do you do it?
Okay, nitty gritty time. We know what you'd like, we know if you're satisfied with what you have - but what do you have, exactly? Only 6% of us are bunnies, 10% of us are basically abstaining. The rest are divided equally between "once in a while" and "regularly". When you compare that to the previous questions, it seems like regularly is okay, but once in a while could use some improvement.

  • How long did you wait after kids before having sex again? 4 of 8
How long did you wait after kids before having sex again?
I don't think we need to ask Jessica Simpson this question. Nearly 3/4 were getting frisky less than 6 months after kids, while half of that group, 37% overall, getting back at it less than 2 months after the kids were born.

  • Have you ever cheated on your partner? 5 of 8
Have you ever cheated on your partner?
I always remember how Dr Phil defines cheating: "if you wouldn't do it with your partner standing beside you, it's cheating." So that moves into office flirting, online chat rooms and more. 16% of respondents to this survey admit they have strayed. However is it the Bill Clinton definition, or Dr Phil's?

  • Sleep or sex? 6 of 8
    Sleep or sex?
Given the choice definition of what a "good night in bed" is, most parents, 82%, prefer sleep to sex.

  • Do you use contraception? 7 of 8
    Do you use contraception?
Unless you want to end up like Tori Spelling, I highly recommend the v-snip. The last thing I want to be is outnumbered, so I volunteered to see the scissors. Most parents agree, with 30% admitting they are 'fixed.' 38% use condoms or an IUD while the remainder rely on the rhythm method and dumb luck.

  • Do you use toys? 8 of 8
    Do you use toys?
We'll end things with a little "brown chicken, brown cow." It's a slim majority, but 51% prefer au naturale to the added company of a rabbit.
