Teaching Kids about Goals (Printable Worksheet)

As adults, we talk a lot about making and keeping our New Year’s resolutions.

And then we, most often, talk about how we broke them.

But what about our kids?

How do we not only teach them how to set goals for themselves but also how to stay committed to their resolutions?

Dr. Michele Borba, award winning author, speaker, and educator on parenting and character education, offers 7 steps for helping children set and achieve their goals.

Her steps are…

Step 1: Define the term, “goal”

Step 2: Talk about your own personal goals and resolutions

Step 3: Help each child create a “dream list” of goal possibilities

Step 4: Tailor the goal to your child

Step 5: Help your child think through the steps to success

Step 6: Track progress

Step 7: Celebrate your family’s goal successes

You can read the details of each of these steps in Dr. Borba’s piece Helping Kids Be Goal-Setters.

I’m including a free printable 2012 New Year’s Resolution Planner for you to use with your child if you want to tackle some New Year’s resolutions. Just click here or on the photo above and the PDF will open for printing or saving.

Happy New Year!
