You know how every once in a while you’ll remember something from your childhood and wonder if that really happen? Like, did our parents really load us all up in the station wagon after cocktail hour and we swerved, seatbeltlessly in the back seat?
And did our friend’s mom really give us an Ex-Lax after dinner because “it’s as close to chocolate as we have.” Speaking of which, did we really eat CAROB of our own free will?
Once those memories come pouring in, they’re tough to stop. So it’s really just a matter of time before the topic of The Magic Garden comes up. As in, did that show really exist or did I have a pre-teen acid trip? Because that was some funky stuff. But yes, it was real. Paula and Carole singing in the Magic Garden, the tree whose branches lowered various props, Sherlock the squirrel, Flapper the bird, and the laughing patch called the Chuckle Patch. From 1972 until 1984, this is what children were exposed to. And I’m pretty sure that I wanted to live there.
The great news is that the ladies who made it all possible are back on tour. The bad news is that I’m now having The Magic Garden flashbacks. I could really use a visit to the Chuckle Patch.
