Summer has only just begun but already our family has logged some major time at our local park, the Clayton Community Park. In fact, since the weather warmed up we’ve stopped by there to play so frequently that we are beginning to get to know and befriend the other park regulars.
This is great for Anders and Danica, who now practically burst with excitement on the drive there in anticipation of learning which playmate will be waiting for them, but it’s also nice for me as it provides the opportunity for a little adult interaction, something I crave as a work from home parent.
Saturday mornings are prime time for park play in our area and on a recent trip we bumped into two of our favorite families. While the kids busied themselves on the jungle gym, the other moms and I settled in on a nearby bench to have a chat. In between shouting reminders to the kids not to climb up the slide and to take care to look out for younger children, we all remarked how lucky we are to have a place like this so close to home to let the children run off their energy and that provides us the opportunity to commiserate with other parents.
It was then that I told the other moms about Coca-Cola’s ‘America Is Your Park Campaign.’ Have you heard about it? This is valuable information for anyone who spends a lot of time on the playground. For the third year in a row, Coca-Cola will be awarding a $100,000 recreation grant to the park that receives the most votes. Second- and third-place will be given $50,000 and $25,000 and one park in the top 25 will be chosen at random to receive a $15,000 grant.
Voting for your park is easy. You just have to visit Live Positively and use the map to locate your park and cast a vote. After voting, you can share your vote with your friends on Facebook and help spread the word about the campaign. You can vote as often as you like, but if you really want to help your park earn the coveted title of ‘America’s Favorite Park’ remember to check-in on Four Square during each visit and encourage the other members of your community to do the same. Each check-in earns your park 100 points.
The Live Positively site is an excellent source of information on how to help your park climb to the top of the list — providing everything from flyers to suggestions on how to get the word out both online and off — and it is also where you can get a badge to use as your Facebook profile picture or cover photo to really up awareness and empower others to get involved.
Are you up to the challenge of helping your park become ‘America’s Favorite Park?’
