The other day I was packing up lunches for the entire family, when I realized a distinct different between my lunch and theirs. My lunch was nutritious and there’s was, well…not. Sure, I’d made a recent commitment to my health and nutrition, but why hadn’t I made the same commitment to theirs?
As I stood there looking at my kids’ lunches filled with processed chips, cookies, and fruit snacks, I realized the “kid-friendly” lunch items I’ve been packing were not only nutritionally void, but full of high sodium, red no. 40, and high fructose corn syrup.
Now listen, I’ve never been the kind of parent to get all spun up about artificial ingredients. My kids enjoy a good Happy Meal, take that lollipop after a haircut, and know the ice cream man by name. I’ve always permitted these naughty eats in moderation, but if I can save the treats for treat time and focus on providing well-balanced nutrition at meal times, I really ought to.
It was decided right then and there to toss out the chips and cookies. As much as I’d like to pretend my kids handled it well, they didn’t. These kids expect a salty crunch and sweet treat in their lunchbox; it’s just the way it’s always been.
In an effort to ease the shock of our farewell to the chip and cookie lunch staples, we made a special trip to the grocery store to find healthier lunch alternatives. We opted for all-natural lightly salted popcorn instead of chips. While perhaps not the perfect alternative, the popcorn contained a whopping 40% less sodium. We then substituted cookies for Yoplait Trix yogurt – the easiest sell of all.

Believe me, no one was more surprised than me to learn that tasty colorful yogurt my kids have come to know and love was colored from all natural sources, not to mention a source of calcium and vitamins A and D. I’m proud to say that we’ve moved to a healthier lunchbox as the new norm without an artificial color or flavor to be found.
In the end, dietary changes can take a little getting used to, especially for kids. The good news is that natural alternatives like Yoplait’s Trix yogurt can pack all the fun and flavor into a healthier lunchbox.
