What Makes A Family?

JD had his 5-year-old well checkup with the Pediatrician yesterday. Before the physical exam, the nurse gave JD, what do you know, some homework to do—well at the office. It was a packet of shapes and JD was told to draw what he saw. After he finished the shapes, the nurse told him to draw his family. She looked at me and said, “Don’t say anything, just let him draw.” The nurse happens to be my best friend’s aunt and she’s known me since I was a lively, ha, teenager (her niece and I got in to heaps of trouble together). I said nothing and JD set to work. This is what he drew …

[Above photo: Yes, uncle Carlo is front and center. JD made this tree at school. He loves his uncle.]

When the doctor came in he looked over JD’s packet and high-fived him on the shapes, then asked him to explain his drawing. He pointed to the tallest person and said, “That’s my uncle Bri. I drew his face upside down, because he’s my fun uncle.” I burst out laughing. Next is uncle Carlo. “He has a lot of guns, but I’m not allowed to see them ever.” I had to interrupt. “Dr., he works in law enforcement … to be clear.”

“This is mommy. She has the longest hair like the mermaid Ariel.” I interrupted again. “This is true, doc!”

“Next to mommy is ‘my Karen,'” JD said.

“And who is Karen,” the doctor asked. “Your babysitter?” “No,” said JD. “It’s Poppy’s friend. They live in the pink palace.” The doctor looked at me. “Ah, my father’s girlfriend. The townhouse is very … pink.”

“This is me,” JD said pointing to the tiny figure. “And this is my Mema and Poppy!” JD said. He was smiling and so proud of his work.

“And who are these creatures,” the doc asked. “This is Max the dog and Katelyn the fish—they live with uncle Carlo,” he said. “And this is my pet, Leo Jack Coppa. I got him for my birthday from aunt Jemma.”

“Well you have a very nice family,” the doctor said.

The rest of the physical proceeded … everything is great! The shots sucked.

In the car on the way to school I asked him about his family drawing. “Why did you put me next to Karen and yourself in between Karen and Mema. “Because you and Karen are such good friends and I love my grandmas.”

Have a great weekend! Who’s in your fam? Share!

[Side note] Katelyn the fish is dead. JD last saw her on Labor Day Weekend. We haven’t told him yet.
