Why Should You Have an Interest in Pinterest?Casey Mullins
I was pretty darn pregnant when I first heard about Pinterest from my very hip friend Stephanie. “It’s new! And you can pin all the things you think are pretty! SEE! LOOK HOW PRETTY!” I’ll admit, it was very pretty and my interest was piqued. Given that I’m a photographer, I speak and listen in visuals, so a site entirely dedicated to finding the pretty and wonderful? SIGN ME UP. My Christmas cards were inspired by a few things I found here and there on Pinterest, our Easter eggs, many of our weekly meals, our garbage can and even my hair is thanks to Pinterest. The moment I saw that my sisters and my mother-in-law were following me on Pinterest and pinning like wild and crazy addicts, I knew there was a little something more to this little site that I first heard about in a tiny bedroom in Northwest Indiana.
But why should you care about Pinterest? (And as I type this I’m glaring at my darling husband who poo-pooed twitter and blogging for the longest time BUT LOOK AT HIM NOW.)
There is of course some social media usage to Pinterest, companies and brands are still trying to figure out how to best utilize this new tool but as an individual I use it to find and keep track of the things I like, the things my friends like and I use it as daily inspiration for how I act, how I parent, how I dress, what I cook, what I eat and what photos I take. Babble is on Pinterest and I look at their boards as my way to keep up on the hip and the happening in decor, fashion, food and kids goods. Imagine being able to see all of *waving hands around wildly* this in visual form? The best of Family Style, Family Kitchen, Baby’s First Year, Kids and Babble voices in lovely photos with delightful little summaries. See something you like? It’s easy enough to simply pin it and remember it forever. No need to bookmark, copy and paste or save for later. It’s like spying on all your super hip friends likes so you can pretend to be just as hip and in the know as they are. (Wait, is it just me that does that?)
Curious about what I pin? Way too much photography, stuff I want to buy and an embarrassing amount of funny cat photos. I feel like I’m still just getting the hang of Pinterest and my most favorite board is “A Pin A Week.” So many people are guilty of pinning all the live long day but never actually doing any of it. I set out to accomplish at least one pin a week and so far I’ve been pretty darn successful. Sometimes it’s food, sometimes it’s photography and sometimes it’s hair or some other little handy tip. I can assure you that “I could totally pin that!” has become part of my everyday vernacular.
