8 Things I've Learned in 8 Weeks of Being a New Mom

My little one turned two months yesterday. It’s so true what people say, that time goes flying by. Part of me cannot wait until he’s walking and talking, but the other part reminds myself to enjoy every phase. It probably won’t be long until he no longer wants to sleep cradled in my arms, right? As I look back at the past two months, I want to share 8 things I’ve learned in the past 8 weeks of being a mom.

What are some things you learned as a new mom? Leave me a comment below. I’d love to know!

  • 1. You Learn as You Go 1 of 8
    1. You Learn as You Go
Before becoming a mom I had never really handled a baby. In the first few weeks, I remember being so scared to even put on his clothes. His little arms seemed so fragile and delicate; I was scared I would break them as I tried to get them through the sleeves. Now I can practically change him in the dark. The same goes with diaper duty.
  • 2. Breastfeeding is Not Easy at First 2 of 8
    2. Breastfeeding is Not Easy at First
How hard can breastfeeding be I thought—boy was I wrong. It's probably the one thing I've struggled with the most. I wish I had known this going in so I didn't set such high expectations on myself. I've learned breastfeeding is not easy, and that's OK. Many women struggle with breastfeeding. But with each day it has only gotten easier and I'm happy I get to share that time and connection with my baby.

    3. I Should Have Been a Songwriter
Well not really, but I do find myself coming up with my own lyrics to songs to try to keep my baby entertained. For some reason the lyrics always accompany the tune of "Los Pollitos Dicen."
  • 4. I Appreciate My Mom a lot More 4 of 8
    4. I Appreciate My Mom a lot More
After becoming a mom myself, I appreciate my mom so much more. As a single mother working two jobs and raising two daughters, I have no idea how she did it.
  • 5. I Never Knew I Would Get Excited for 5 Hours of Sleep 5 of 8
    5. I Never Knew I Would Get Excited for 5 Hours of Sleep
I never knew how excited I would get for five hours of straight sleep. If I had a dollar for every person that told me to get all the sleep while I can, I'd be a millionaire. Part of me didn't want to believe them, but now that I have a newborn I can totally see what they were talking about.
  • 6. I Get Excited to Speak to Other Moms 6 of 8
    6. I Get Excited to Speak to Other Moms
It's like you become part of a secret mom club. The other day I was speaking to a client and my heart lit up when she mentioned she also had a newborn. It's like an instant bond.
  • 7. I Never Knew I Would Become a Germaphobe and a Vegan 7 of 8
    7. I Never Knew I Would Become a Germaphobe and a Vegan
My baby gets his first vaccinations this month and since then, the thought of him getting sick freaks me out. I must go through two bottles of Purell in one week. I've also become a vegan. The food I was eating was making my baby super gassy (bye bye frijoles negros) so I've had to cut out dairy, meat and other food from my diet.
  • 8. I Never Knew I Could Love Someone So Much 8 of 8
    8. I Never Knew I Could Love Someone So Much
Yes, I love my lovely husband and my mom and sister, but it's really hard to explain this type of love. Just one smile from my baby can make any sleepless night feel like a walk in the park. He fills my heart with so much joy and I'm so blessed to be his mom.
