Is your hair in a rut? Believe me, I’ve been there. Actually, I’m kind of there right now. Maybe you just need a little pick-me-up. Are you thinking about a blowout, but don’t want to spend the money? What if I told you, there was a way to get a salon-like blowout at home? It’s a lot easier than you think.

I reached out to Alterna Haircare‘s Global Creative Director, Michael Shaun Corby for his expertise. He’s been in the professional salon industry for more than 18 years, and has been in demand by top celebrities including Rosario Dawson and Nicole Richie. And now he wants to share his own list of “dos and don’ts” to help you achieve the perfect blowout. Say “bye-bye” to the days of just flipping your hair over for a quick blow dry.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Your favorite hair care products
  • A round brush
  • A high-quality blowdryer

DO start with a quality shampoo and conditioner—followed by a towel dry.

DON’T rub too hard when towel drying or you will damage strands of your hair.

DO follow with a “rough dry” with a blow dryer and your hands to ensure that all excess moisture is out of your hair.

DON’T forget to protect your strands of hair, by applying a small amount of product at the ends, such as a nourishing oil.

DO go big! For a voluminous blow dry, apply a volumizing product throughout hair.

DON’T use too much product you can always add more but you can’t take excess away.

DO take the time to divide the hair into clean, even sections and blow dry one by one, as opposed to trying to dry it without sectioning.

DON’T blow dry in an upwards motion, as this causes more damage.

DO make sure sure your roots are dry before moving to the mid-lengths and ends to smooth away frizz.

DON’T hold the dryer in one spot for a long time, make sure to keep the blowdryer moving slightly as to avoid burning or damaging hair.

DO keep it in place. Spray your entire head with hairspray once dry to lock in the style.

What are your tips for an at-home blowout?

Michael Shaun Corby’s recommended products: Alterna Bamboo Volume 48-Hour Sustainable Volume Spray ($25), Alterna CC Cream 10-in-1 Complete Correction Leave-In Hair Perfector ($25), Alterna Caviar Anti-Aging Working Hair Spray ($20), and Alterna Caviar Nourishing Omega Oil ($38).
