Confessions of a Mom Who Never Thought She’d Be a Dog Owner

we are that familiaI like dogs.

I don’t love dogs.

With that said I’d never thought I would be a dog owner.  Until . . . well these three little handsome men began longingly wishing, hoping, and praying for a dog.

kids want a dog

Every time they’d see a dog they looked up at me with those big brown eyes that danced at the thought of owning a dog, and slowly I gave into it. It simply just got harder to ignore. The worst thing was that daddy also wanted a dog. So that made me the bad guy. And who wants to be remembered as the parent who denied their kids the opportunity for a furry BFF?

So finally, after years of adamantly saying “no,” I succumbed. We decided to adopt a dog from a shelter and we came home with this adorable mixed breed, Milly.

owning a dog

After only hours of having a dog, I discovered that dogs fart and they stink. Oh, and did you know that there are doggy diapers? Yes, a friend uses them for her little puppy. Just when I started looking forward to the end of our diaper phase, we go out and buy a puppy.

I didn’t realize that dogs shed like crazy. I could easily make a rug from our dog’s hair. I knew they’d shed, but I had no idea how much. Our dog is currently banned from our TV room, because you can’t even walk past that room without her hair attaching to you. Being covered in dog hair is one of my pet peeves (no pun intended).

Did you know dogs need their teeth brushed? I couldn’t tell you if it’s an easy task or not, because we’ve yet to do this.   can barely manage making sure my three little boys brush their teeth.

Whoa, and this one was shocking, female dogs have periods. Yes, a menstrual cycle. Who knew? Not me.

I knew having a dog would come with a cost, but I didn’t realize it was such a financial commitment. We went out of town and had to find someone to watch our dog.  I don’t know how many times I wanted to say, “Please take good care of Milly. She’s loved by everyone in our household and we have invested a lot of money in her.” I didn’t say that to her, but I thought it.

Having a puppy is like having a baby in so many ways. I had no idea we would once again be waking up in the middle of the night to tend to the puppy’s needs. We were determined to train her from the first day and I am so glad we did, and we rejoiced when she finally informed us she needed to pee.  I was silly enough to give into a owning a puppy the exact weekend when we decided to potty train our youngest son. Not a good idea.

And if you want a good laugh, read my post here on my attempts to run with a dog. And most importantly, what I didn’t know about dogs, is how all along I had a special little place in my heart just for a furry BFF.  Shhhh!  Don’t tell my family I said that.

With that said, even though I have had some surprises, I wouldn’t change having Milly as a part of our family.  She’s a wonderful, smart and loving dog.
