10 Powerful Quotes About Race in the Wake of the Trayvon Martin Verdict

Racism is not a comfortable topic to tackle. It is a subject that stirs up confusion, anger and deep-seeded prejudices, especially here in the United States. Our national baggage on the topic is heavy and although our country has made much progress from the days of slavery and segregation, there is still a whole lot of work to be done.

The wounds of racism were exposed and became part of our national dialogue this week after the George Zimmerman trial ended in a not guilty verdict for the shooting of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin. While Trayvon’s murder was tragic, it was not totally in vain. Trayvon Martin’s father told Time’s Elizabeth Dias that, “God had a purpose for Trayvon to use his death to open the eyes of America.”

As part of our national discussion, here are ten powerful quotes about race to ponder, now more than ever.
