I remember a few years ago, right after I got divorced, this song came out that was so upbeat and hopeful I just couldn’t help but be swept away by it. That track was Michael Buble’s “Haven’t Met You Yet,” and listening to it caused such a swell of optimism inside me that I somehow got really excited about the possibility that this incredible person who I hadn’t met yet was out there, and that we would meet one day – when the time was right – and it would be “so amazing,” just like that Canadian smooth-talker promised.
Now, I don’t really believe in the concept of “the one” (or do I? ARE YOU OUT THERE???), but I do believe in having a reasonable amount of faith that I can have a great long-term relationship again at some point in the (near? somewhat near? not terribly distant?) future. Not that I’m super hung-up about manifesting that anymore (seriously CALL ME) but that every once in a while when I stop thinking about all of my responsibilities, it’s fun to dream about that potential romance (and by “dream about” I mean get deluded enough by the daily email from OK Cupid to give my matches a cheery click only to be left feeling dirty and stained 10 minutes later).
So, if you’re like me (SINGLE AND ALONE) and you’re looking for some tunes to help you bide your time while you wait for that perfect (I DON’T EXPECT YOU TO BE PERFECT IT’S OUR IMPERFECTIONS THAT MAKE US BEAUTIFULLY HUMAN) person to walk through your door (OH GOD DON’T JUST WALK IN WITHOUT KNOCKING THEN I’LL THINK YOU’RE A THIEF), give these ditties a spin. (Just don’t be put off by the fact that a surprising number of them come from cartoons.)
10 Sweet Songs for Those Waiting to Find Love 1 of 11Here we go...
Haven’t Met You Yet by Michael Buble 2 of 11This song is admittedly cheesy, but it's so upbeat you can overlook that, I'm sure. It's probably not a great idea to wait for a love that's "gonna change" you, as Buble sings (change yourself first and then you might find love!), but I do appreciate the intense optimism that runs throughout the lyrics and melody.
Love Will Come to You by Indigo Girls 3 of 11I love this song and have for years. It's so sweet and touching, the voice of a friend saying, "I said love will come to you, hoping just because I spoke the words that they're true, as if I've offered up a crystal ball to look through, where there's now one, there will be two." The end is particularly poignant.
The Man I Love, sung by Billie Holiday 4 of 11"One day he'll come along, the man I love..." This jazz standard has been done by lots of great musicians, so go find a version you really dig and enjoy!
Someone’s Waiting for You from The Rescuers 5 of 11This song wasn't written about romantic love, but the lyrics totally work in reference to a dating relationship... that is if you can separate them from the sad, sad animation from the movie The Rescuers, about an orphan trying to find parents. "Be brave little one. Make a wish for each sad little tear. Hold your head up though no one is near. Someone's waiting for you."
Find a Way to My Heart by Phil Collins 6 of 11Yes, Phil Collins is even cheesier than Michael Buble, but who cares? He's a great musician, a hell of a singer and he MEANS IT, man. "There's a reason I hide my heart, Out of sight out of mind, And when I find out just who you are, The door will be open for you."
Goodnight My Someone from The Music Man 7 of 11The Music Man is one of the greatest American musicals ever written, and this song is such a sweet gem. I sing this every night to my daughter, but I can remember spending many an evening as a pre-teen and teen looking out my window at the brightest star, making a wish just like Marian, played in the 1962 film by Shirley Jones.
Someday My Prince Will Come from Snow White 8 of 11Such a classic song of dreamy romance. "He'll whisper I love you, and steal a kiss or two..." This version is sung by Ernestine Anderson.
Someone to Watch Over Me sung by Amy Winehouse 9 of 11Amy never did find the hero she was looking for to save her, but she sure did have an incredible voice. Another classic from The American Songbook that has been recorded by so many different voices.
Wait for Me by Rebecca St. James 10 of 11Rebecca St. James is a Christian artist, so this song is as much about abstinence as it is about waiting to find the right person to be in a relationship with, but what the hell? (Sorry, Rebecca.) It's a cute pop song.
Somewhere Out There from An American Tail 11 of 11Just like the song from The Rescuers, this isn't really about romantic love ... that is, until you hear James Ingram and Linda Ronstadt croon it! "Somewhere out there, out where dreams come truuuuueeeeeeee."
p.s. - There's also this hilarious version by Zac Braff and his Scrubs co-star Donald Faison if you want to take waiting for love less seriously.
