Shopping January, shopping discounts, January sales items, bulk shopping winter, winter sales

Although you might be sick of shopping, now is the time to get great deals.

You’re probably sick of shopping now that the holidays are over, right? Well, now is actually the time you should get out and shop because some of the largest discounts (especially on high-ticket items) are available.

Manufacturers need to unload merchandise to make room for the new models, and they also need to simply get rid of what is leftover from the holiday season … which translates into savings for us.

FreeShipping.com does a cool yearly guide that outlines the best items to purchase each month at the lowest prices.

Here are their picks for January:

  • Calendars

    Calendars

Of course, calendar prices will be slashed now, so if you still haven’t bought one, you can probably pick up a $15 calendar for about 5 bucks. I wish I had known that myself when I shelled out $20 bucks for a year’s worth of black lab pics (although I do love it). So what if you missed a few weeks of the New Year? These selections from Calendars.com are half-price.

  • Gift Cards

    Gift Cards

Gift cards might seem like a safe present, but things can still go wrong in the end. Consider the teen that received a Toys "R" Us card or the tomboyish girl who got a gift card to American Girl. The good news is that this someone else’s misgivings may equal opportunity for you, as gift cards are discounted right now. And if you have any gift cards yourself that you can’t use, you can turn them in for cash.

  • Perfume

    Perfume

Here’s the scoop on January fragrance sales: you only have a few weeks until prices start skyrocketing up for Valentine’s Day, but if you strike right now, you’ll find your favorite perfumes discounted. Click here for great deals on fragrance value sets at Sephora.

  • Video Games

    Video Games

Rayman for the DS. My son had to have it. And it’s the second week of January and he’s already bored of it! In all likelihood, he, like many other kids, will trade in their new games for others they don’t have. That means you can probably get a $40 nearly brand new game for less than 20 bucks. Gamestop has a pretty decent trade-in system that we use frequently.

  • Furniture

    Furniture

“Most new furniture models hit stores in February and August, which means leftovers from last year's collection have to go to make room for the latest and greatest,” says Kendal Perez, spokesperson for FreeShipping.com. Naturally, in January, retailers want to unload older versions for cheaper.

  • Winter Coat

    Winter Coat

It’s good news and bad news on the coat front. The prices are cheaper, but the selection is smaller. Still, I was able to land a coat for my 14-year-old at T.J. Maxx this past weekend for $30 off regular price.

  • Seasonal Produce

    Seasonal Produce

What? Seasonal produce in the winter? It’s true that you can get deals on lemons, oranges, papayas, tangelos, tangerines, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, grapefruit and leeks. My produce aisle offered beautiful produce and yes, the prices have been slashed. I stocked up just yesterday.

    Dieting and Fitness

New Year’s resolutions anyone? Perhaps the stores were a little more serious about shaping up than their consumers because if you’ve been a to a local Target store lately you have probably noticed the massively discounts on anything health- and fitness-related: yoga mats, stair climbers, DVDs, and even protein shakes.

Fitness isn’t the only resolution for the New Year. Did you know that most home-based business start up in January? Retailers do, and that’s why they they are offering their best deals on office furniture now. I have my eye on a black, L-shaped desk at Staples myself , $100 off.

  • Christmas Stuff

    Christmas Stuff

My sister has already bought her children’s Christmas cards for next year and packed them away. Yes, stores are still selling holiday stuff at discounts, so if you can manage to think ahead to Christmas 2012 already, go get them (and God bless you!). If you have the storage space, some prices on pre-lit Christmas trees have been cut in half.
