A 10-year-old gave birth to a baby girl in Columbia. ABC News reports that the girl “arrived at the hospital in tears and “enormous pain” from the contractions.”
The girl’s daughter was born weighing 5 pounds via cesarean section.
Mothers who are just children themselves run a very high risk of pregnancy induced health issues, such as high blood pressure known as preeclampsia. Their babies are at risk for fetal growth restriction, says Dr. Frederick Gonzalez, a clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology at NYU Langone Medical Center in the ABC News piece:
“These girls are not ready to be pregnant. Their bodies are not mature. They may be able to get pregnant, but being able to have a baby is a whole other situation.”
The girl is a member of the Wayuu people, an indigenous tribe in northern Colombia. The father is unknown, as is his age, but pressing charges would be out of the question, in any case, because the tribe has its own jurisdictions:
“We’ve already seen several cases [of pregnancy] in girls of the Wayuu ethnicity,” Efraín Pacheco Casadiego, director of the hospital where the girl gave birth. “When in fact [the girls] should be playing with dolls, they are having to care for a baby. This is shocking.”
While this news is distressing for both the child mother and the baby, it’s unfortunately not the first time this has happened, despite reports that this girl is the world’s youngest mother. Another 10-year-old gave birth in Spain back in 2010 and a 9-year-old delivering a 6-pound son in China in early 2010.
