12 Crafty Comebacks for the Awkward Etsy Mom

By julieminer |

Namaste and stuff.

I need to admit something. I’m an awkward Etsy person. Whew. I’m glad that’s out there. I’m not one of those cool Etsy people who are artistic and fancy. I’m pretty much the opposite of that.

Etsy is a website (for those of you who don’t know) where artists, designers and crafters can sell their stuff. Fine art, jewelry, clothes, bags, stuff for kids, furniture — pretty much everything awesome that you can think of.

There are many different kinds of people that are into Etsy, so I’m not alone there in my awkwardness. Which is nice for me. But on Etsy, as in real life, there are cool girls. More specifically, there are cool Etsy moms.

And sometimes I see them in real life and they say things to me, maybe trying to see if I’m one of them. But of course I’m not. I’m a dork in stretched-out yoga pants and v-neck tee from Target who just likes looking at pretty things on the internet. I’m not sure if they’re nice or not. Sometimes the things they say seem a little jelly-fishy stingy. This only makes me behave more awkwardly.

So the following represents my efforts to practice not being an idiot when these cool and hip moms ask me things about my purchases. I will unquestionably bungle it in real life, so I take a small degree of satisfaction from at least pretending that I can come up with something snappy.

Crafty Moms Love Etsy, Even When They're Not Cool

You have way too much free time if you made that!

Respond with: “I didn’t make her hair clip. Goodness no! I think it was a craft project. Her preschool is really very good. Where do your kids go again?”

Maybe don’t admit: “She found it on the playground and crammed it on her head before I could stop her. We’re hoping she doesn’t have lice now.”

My MIL bought my daughter two of those handmade, heirloom dresses from some fancy shop in Atlanta. We live in KY, so I know the MIL had them specially made for the kid. I thought it was quite ugly, but I was going to put it on the kid for peace’s sake. However, the child absolutely refused to wear it. I still have it in her closet, just in case she changes her mind.

Hey Now, i used that same pan the soap pic used to make homemade rainbow crayons for the valentines goodie bags. Okay, so maybe it was mostly cause i was tired of picking up the same hundred or so little one inch crayon remnants that im to cheap to throw away AND im tired of buying anything for a goodie bag for EVERY stinking holiday…and i kinda secretly like the smell of melting wax :S.
