The decision is in. In a 5 to 4 ruling, the Supreme Court upheld the Affordable Health Care Act, commonly referred to as Obamacare.
It being an election year, in his national address Obama stated that he understands that this act is “not good politics.” But stated that it is, “good for the country it’s good for the American people.” Obama knows that this will be a much-debated topic saying, “there will be lots of discussion about this about who won or who lost. That’s how these things tend to be viewed here in Washington.”
So how is it good for the county and the people aka us? Did we win or did we lose? In his own words here are 15 things President Obama wants you to know about the Affordable Health Care Act:
What the Supreme Court’s Decision Means:
“They have reaffirmed a fundamental principle that here in America in the wealthiest nation on earth that no illness or accident should lead to any family’s financial ruin.”
If You Already Have Health Insurance:
“If you are one of the 250 million Americans who already have health insurance you will get to keep your health insurance. It will just make it more secure and more affordable.”
“Insurance companies can no longer impose lifetime limits and the amount of care you receive. ”
For the Children:
“They can no longer discriminate against children with pre-existing conditions.”
“They can no longer drop your coverage if you get sick.”
“They can no longer jack up your premiums without reason.”
They are required to provide free preventative care like check ups and mammograms.
“By this August 13 million of you will receive a rebate from your insurance company because (they) spent too much on things like administrative costs and CEO bonuses and not enough on your health care.”
For the 26 and Under Crowd:
“Young adults under the age of 26 are able to stay on their parents health care plan.”
“Seniors (will) receive a discount on their prescriptions drugs.”
“If you are one of the 30 million Americans who don’t have health insurance, starting in 2014, this (act) will offer you an array of quality, affordable private health insurance plans to choose from.”
“They won’t be able to charge you more because you are a woman.”
No Going Broke to Keep Alive:
“They won’t be able to bill you into bankruptcy.”
How to Pay if You’re Poor?
“If you can’t afford the premiums, you’ll receive a credit that will help pay for them.”
But if You Can Pay:
“If you can afford health insurance, then you need to buy it. Take the responsibility to do so.”
