Day of the Dead or Dia De Los Muertos is a traditional Mexican holiday designed to be a time of celebrating and remembering ancestors who have passed. It is believed to be a time in which the living and the dead “commune” with one another. Instead of seeing death as something scary it is seen as something that is simply a part of the cycle of life. The atmosphere is lively, filled with bright colors and individuals who are happy, not sad. Those that celebrate feast and give offerings at altars for those that are no longer with them. Skulls are an intricate part of this holiday and many men and women adorn their faces in makeup decorated to look like them. Oftentimes flowers are incorporated into the design.
Given what this day represents it is not uncommon for couples to chose it as the day they celebrate their union of marriage, a union during which many couples commit to love and honor one another until death they do part. And of course a Day of the Dead Wedding celebration wouldn’t be complete without a wedding cake topped with sugar skulls. In celebration of all of the couples who said and will say their I do’s on Dias De Los Muertos I’ve rounded up 18 sugar skull cake toppers via Etsy. Take a look at them after the jump!
