5 Saddest Deaths in Children's Movies

By cole gamble |

It’s not that I have a compulsive need to bum you out. Really, I was looking for a nice jolly Christmas movie post to write, but instead you get this, the 5 saddest deaths in children’s movie history.

The Never Ending Story – Atreyu’s Horse in the Swamp of Sadness.

Um, horsey suicide? Yikes.

The Lion King – Mufasa Get a Helping Hand

Ultimate guilt trip. Admit it, you’ve thought of faking your own death just to guilt your kids into cleaning their room.

My Girl – Macaulay Culkin is No Fan of the Bees

Get the final two at Buzzfeed. Spoiler Alert! A certain wooden creature’s mom gets it.

Artax’s suicide was heartbreaking. There’s lot of sad in that movie, even when people aren’t dying, but did I ever love it when I was little.

  2. MGM says:

Littlefoot’s mom in Land Before Time, I still cry at that. I always thought Mufasa’s death in Lion King was worse than Bambi’s mom. Mufasa is thrown into the stampede by his own brother and Simba watches his father get trampled to death, then sobs over his body. Bambi didn’t see her get shot and the audience didn’t have to watch a child sobbing over his dead parent in that movie. Lion King was so much more brutal.

That swamp of sadness was no joke. It ate Artex’s good vibes up. Honestly this scene and Atreyu’s tearful pleading with him not to give in was one of the most horrific scenes when I was little. But I loved and still love The Never Ending Story.
