My daughter has never eaten at McDonald’s. And when she sees the “golden arches,” she will stick out her tongue at the fast food franchise, she is not a fan even though she has never tasted their food. And I should confess, this is all our doing. From a young age we brainwashed our daughter about the dangers of fast food, especially the biggies like McDonald’s. Our daughter would probably get along very well with 9-year-old Hannah Robertson.
Hannah, a third grader, scolded – in person – the CEO of McDonald’s Mr. Don Thompson. The young lady attended the recent McDonald’s shareholder meeting and read a pre-written speech saying, “It would be nice if you stopped trying to trick kids into wanting to eat your food all the time.” She was speaking about not just the nutritional issues but how the chain does their marketing to lure in the young eaters. “Mr. Thompson, don’t you want kids to be healthy so they can live a long and happy life?”
So where does this little girl get the gumption and access to take on McDonald’s? Her mom, Kia Robertson, just happens to be a food blogger whose focus is healthy eating for children and founded the site “Today I Ate a Rainbow.” Her mom was at the event with Corporate Accountability International, a group that takes on fast food companies marketing to children.
What was the CEO’s reaction to young Hannah’s scolding? “First off, we don’t sell junk food, Hannah,” he said. “My kids also eat McDonald’s. When they were about your size, to my son who is with us today…” Thompson also added, “We are not marketing unjustly to kids,” saying that they don’t market to students at school. “We sell a lot of fruits and veggies and are trying to sell even more,” he said.
