A Dark Day in the Criminal Justice System: The Casey Anthony Vedict

By Meredith Carroll |

Casey Anthony

Hopefully her demons will keep her up at night for the rest of her days

Not since OJ Simpson was found not guilty of murdering Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman have I felt so sickened at the outcome of a trial.

In what universe is Casey Anthony not guilty? I mean, I get it: I wasn’t in the courtroom (or watching the live stream) or the jury room and don’t have every single piece of evidence in front of me. But between us, how is she not guilty?

It has been reported that her parents left the courtroom today and “are not celebrating with [Casey] at this time.” What’s to celebrate? That the murder of an innocent toddler has gone unpunished?

Even if she’s truly not guilty (and not just legally not guilty), how does Casey Anthony justify all the lies she told in the time her daughter was missing before she was arrested? And the time she spent partying while her daughter was missing? If you’re a parent, or just a person with a heart and soul in tact, then you know if a toddler goes missing and it’s yours, you do everything in your power and beyond to help ensure her safe return, not go out boozing and lying to investigators.

In all good conscience, whether she’s guilty of murder, how does Casey Anthony sleep at night, and will she sleep any better if she really got away with murder?

Either way, here’s hoping she can never, ever become a mother again.

What do you think of the trial’s outcome?

i”m just speechless although i can believe it happened unfortunately. Look at O.J. Simpson and Michael Jackson cases?? We may never know what really happened but i just feel like there has been NO justice for caylee :( so sad. One of the hardest things to fathom is that she may serve no additional time in jail??? i just dont have words for this outcome….

  2. herpaderp says:

so you didnt watch the trial or look at the evidence yet you just flat out say she is guilty? how does that make any sense. I feel sorry for your children if you base your decisions off nothing.

  3. Dave says:

Unbelievable. This young woman killed her 2-year old daughter, cost the state/country tons of cash, lied and partied while her daughter was “missing” and the US Justice System releases her back into the fray? I hope someone goes “Dexter” on her… she deserves it. US justice is a joke, as has been proved countless times already.

  4. CaseyIsInocent says:

Justice has been done. Just because Casey Anthony behaved like any other young adult during the prime of her life, doesn’t make her a criminal. I thank God that the Jury was able to see the truth and let this innocent woman walk away with her dignity and her life. Too bad for all those old bitter people that wanted to see her fry and die. To those people I say: take care of your own family. I bet most of your love ones are worse than Casey ever was in your collective imaginations.

  5. Maria F says:

I DID watch most of the trial, the evidence parts. And to me, it still comes down to 31 DAYS NOT KNOWING WHERE YOUR 2yr old IS… Most of us on here are parents, does that make any sense? And it wasn’t till grandma called that the police even knew about this child. This family has been trashed by this one girl. “Bella Vita” indeed.

  6. alice thompson says:

I watched almost every minute and am appalled that she won yet again. She’s a murderer of her own daughter and I think the evidence was ample!!! Now she’ll continue to lie on the talk shows and tell us how she was sexually abused by George. As much as she is hated, she better invest in bullet-proof attire! And she’ll have the money. On top of everything else, she’s going to get rich over this! Movies, books, interviews; I’m sick.

  7. Sylvia Balogh says:

Only in the United States, anyone that wants to murder someone, just go there!

  8. JCWR says:

I am both horrified and disgusted by the outcome of this trial. Not only did she lie for the 31 days her child was missing before her mother made the 911 call, but she continued on with the lies for months, probably years, in order to protect herself. Casey Anthony is a very, very mentally unstable young woman, and obviously, her family has enabled her throughout her life. This verdict will do nothing but reinforce her psychosis. I also believe her mother Cindy suffers from many of the same psychological issues, however, not quite as extreme. Clearly, they both live in delusional world where they make the circumstances fit their needs & will do & say anything, regardless of how absurd it is.

I venture to say that Casey Anthony has learned absolutely nothing from this experience, other than she can get away with anything, including murder. I can only hope that George & Cindy Anthony have finally got the strength & presence of mind to do what they should have done years ago, which is to stop facilitating the narcissitic animal that they raised.

  9. Ian says:

To the last commenter…Do you really think an innocent person, finding their child lying lifeless in a pool would try to cover it up to look like murder? An innocent person would call 911 first thing…the end…period.

  10. Dave says:

@Herpaderp: I feel sorry for Earth and humanity that you are a part of it. She is guilty. I am 100% sure of it. Slap her on a lie detector machine, watch it do it’s magic when asked if she killed or played a substantial role in the death of her kid. Ask anyone Casey spent time with during the time Caylee was “missing” if they saw Caylee, or if Casey even mentioned her… I’ll guarantee Casey never once said “oh, time to go pick up my kid” or “my kid did the funniest thing today” or “Hey Jim, instead of getting wasted and having drunken intercourse, lets take my kid, Caylee to the zoo” during the “missing” period. She’s guilty and the US Justice System allowed her to literally get away with murder.

  11. Suzanne says:

Today I really want to believe in Karma and hope that it comes to get Casey Anthony hard!!!!!! “Not guilty” in court does not mean she’s innocent or that she’s going to have a “Bella Vita”…hope she gets what’s comin’ to her in the end…after her million dollar book I hope she has a HORRIBLE & short life! Sorry but our “justice system” is an oxymoron!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  12. Jordan Speaks says:

    utterly shocking and disgusting

  13. Gracie says:

They should have let the jury smell the air sample!!!! I cannot believe she was acquitted. Whether accidental or not she knows what happened to Caylee!!! She put her in the woods and I hope the days she walks out of jail someone takes care of her

  14. Advocate for CAYLEE says:

CASEY ANTHONY GOT AWAY WITH MURDER!!!! SHE KILLED HER CHILD AND THREW HER AWAY LIKE SHE WAS YESTERDAY’S TRASH!!!! SHE IS A SELFISH INGRATE AND A PATHOLOGICAL LIAR!!! JUSTICE WAS NOT SERVED FOR POOR LITTLE INNOCENT CAYLEE!! I JUST HOPE AND PRAY THAT SHE WILL NEVER HAVE KIDS AGAIN! WHETHER OR NOT THIS WAS AN ACCIDENT THE LED TO MURDER, CASEY DESERVES TO PAY FOR THE CRIME! HOW COULD ANY MOTHER WITH A HEART AND LOVE FOR THEIR CHILD NOT REPORT THEIR CHILD “MISSING”….EVIDENTLY SHE WAS NOT MISSING, SHE WAS DEAD AND CASEY KNEW THIS!!!! SHE MAY NOT HAVE BEEN PUNICHED HERE ON EARTH BUT SHE WILL HAVE TO ANSWER TO GOD!
SO MUCH FOR JUSTICE IN AMERICA!

  15. Dave says:

Only in the USA can Sarah Palin become a famous politician, and ONLY IN THE USA can Casey Anthony be acquitted of murdering her daughter. Complete rubbish. I shake my finger, shake my head and say a prayer for little Caylee. Your country has wronged you.

  16. kwll says:

I think you need to spend quite a bit more time reviewing the legal requirements of a murder conviction. Nobody cares about the public’s emotional needs and emotion is the enemy of impartiality which is what this country’s system of laws is supposed to be based on.

Let me ask you how okay you’d be if the precedent you’re asking for was established and someone you don’t dislike gets found guilty of something because there is no particular need to actually connect them directly with the crime they’re accused of. Or let’s skip straight to you personally. Perhaps the continuation of your life on this planet needs to be determined by what people who don’t particularly like you and your decisions think you “probably” did?

How long is it going to be before you’re whining about your Constitutional rights? The same ones you think should be waved in this instance for someone else because everybody has a “heart and soul”?

I don’t care what it “looks like”. In this country you prove something was done, and then you prove someone, to the exclusion of everybody else, actually did that something, or you fail. There’s already an alternate juror on record saying the defense’s theory and half a dozen other things the public think swayed them meant nothing. They ruled based on lack of evidence. They saw absolutely nothing that connected Casey and put her at the scene of any murder, and they saw nothing definitive that proved there was a murder in the first place. There wasn’t a shred of evidence or a single report of child abuse in the entire 2 years of Caylee’s life and despite how badly you want it to be so, not reporting a child missing for 31 days when that child could very well be sitting in a $10K easy chair eating meals fit for kings and searching for something to be unhappy about is not child abuse. Lousy parenting? Sure. But lousy parenting is not a crime punishable by death in this country.

And all this despite the jury believing that Casey probably buried or helped bury the body because unlike the rest of America, they know what beyond reasonable doubt actually means and they know what it says to Americans if reasonable doubt and burdens of proof play second fiddle to emotion.

Caylee is dead, and that’s horrible. But she’s dead whether the right person or the wrong person pays for it. And from what I’m hearing from this butt hurt public claiming to want justice for Caylee so badly while lining their trashcans every day with newspapers detailing scores of other dead and disregarded children, it doesn’t matter either way.

Casey lied, and she got convicted for lying. If you wanted her convicted for something else, maybe you should have passed a bar exam, flown to Florida and proved her demonstrably guilty of something else. Short of that I have no sympathy whatsoever for people who jump bandwagons and join hip mob justice campaigns that want to re-write the Constitution and laws of jurisprudence whenever they’re not convenient as currently written.

And please do compare this to the OJ trial, since that’s the last time lazy cops who had a chance to step up and do their jobs chose instead to kick back and eat doughnuts for 4 months and cost the prosecution a chance to obtain evidence that actually proves a murder.

  17. kwll says:

    This

    http://edition.cnn.com/2011/CRIME/02/16/florida.body.bag/index.html?iref=obinsite

is what evidence of child abuse and murder or manslaughter of a child by a parent looks like. Now if you can make the Casey Anthony evidence look anywhere near as bereft of reasonable doubt as this evidence is to yourself, your rorschach test results must be the stuff of legend.

(“you” refers to anybody who follows the above link.)

  18. UseYourBrain says:

Kwll, you disgust me. You are out of your mind. Are you on meds? If not, maybe you should be. Maybe you think Caylee drowned and George put tape over her mouth; then I bet he gave her to Roy to keep until he could pretent to find her. See, I agree with you, Casey is innocent…..NOT! There was ample evidence just not enough brain power in the jury box!
