Historian Douglas Brinkley said, “The Kennedys exploded on the scene and Hyannis Port became a place that everybody wanted to see. The political pros knew to start promoting this compound. And we are getting all these personal shots of a president on the beach, on a boat, with his kids, playing touch football. It was the beginning of packaging a president of allowing your personal life to be part of a narrative.”
And John F. Kennedy’s personal life has always been a large part of his allure and legacy. He had a glamorous wife, gorgeous children and a family of fun-loving Cape Cod summer time dwellers. The John F. Kennedy Library has recently shared old footage of the beloved first family as they frolic in the sun with family, friends and political luminaries.
The footage was from the summer of 1963 and as CBS News states is, “especially poignant.” In early August, Jackie Kennedy gave birth prematurely to their son Patrick, who died three days later. And just four months later – on November 22nd, 1963 – the President was killed. This footage was of his last summer. It’s touching, bittersweet, and fascinating.
