Columbia professor Adam Dell is in a custody battle with Top Chef host Padma Lakshmi. Their daughter Krishna turns 1 in February, at which time their current visitation agreement will end. TMZ reports that Dell and Lakshmi’s relationship has been heated since Krishna was born. Dell allegedly “went to the hospital and launched into a 4-hour tirade over the name” Lakshmi chose for their daughter, and has complained that he was only seeing his daughter 7 hours a week. “Sources connected with Padma say she has never denied him a day of visitation,” according to TMZ. Dell is allowed nine days of visitation a month according to their current custody agreement, but now he is suing for full custody, The New York Post reports.
Dell claims that Lakshmi “has refused to negotiate a reasonable co-parenting agreement” and that he “tried his best to avoid going to court, but Ms. Lakshmi has given him no other choice at this time.” Lakshmi feels “bullied” by Dell and that this is his way “of forcing a relationship.”
If Lakshmi and Dell can remove their feelings for one another from the equation, it will make it much easier for them to come to an agreement about custody and visitation. Retribution is never in the best interest of a child, and neither of them seems to be handling the situation very well. Let’s hope that Dell really “does not want to take the baby away from her” and that “he hopes this will result in a reasonable co-parenting agreement.”
