Over the weekend Shaima Alawadi – a mother of five – died after succumbing to injuries she endured from being beaten in her El Cajon home (in San Diego County).
The 32-year-old Iraqi immigrant had been on life support since she was attacked on Wednesday. She had been found by her teenage daughter in the family’s living room. So far there is no suspect at hand but it has been revealed that there is evidence that this may have been a hate crime. What happened?
According to reports, Alawadi had been beaten with a tire iron and that a note had been left near her when she was discovered that read, “go back to your country, you terrorist.” This wasn’t the first note Alawadi had received. Just last week they had gotten another one that said, ‘This is our country, not yours, you terrorists,'” her daughter, Fatima Al Himidi told CNN. “So my mom ignored that, thinking (it was) kids playing around, pranking. And so the day they hurt her, they left it again and it said the same thing.”
Due to these notes, the crime is being investigated as a hate crime, but haven’t ruled out other motives as well. Her husband had been out of the house reportedly taking the younger kids to school. And it’s not just San Diego country that is concerned about what happened to her, the government of Iraq has asked that her body be sent to Baghdad and they are pushing for a more thorough investigation into her killing.
The family had only been living in El Cajon for a couple of weeks. Before they had been living in a suburb of Detroit after they had moved from Iraq in the mid 90s.
Do you think that there is more racial tension in America recently? Or we’re just hearing about it more?
