Artist Creates Amazing Drawings with 4-Year-Old Daughter

Mica Hendricks is an artist and illustrator who blogs at busymockingbird.com. She recently shared a few drawings she created with her daughter in a blog post titled, “Collaborating with a 4-year-old.” In the post, Hendricks shares the lessons that she’s learned while making art with a 4-year-old, including this poignant message: “If you have a preconceived notion of how something should be, YOU WILL ALWAYS BE DISAPPOINTED. Instead, just go with it, just ACCEPT it, because usually something even more wonderful will come out of it.”

Hendricks started making drawings with her daughter one day when she pulled out a brand new sketchbook, and her daughter “swooped over … with an intense look” and cried, “OOOH! Is that a NEW sketchbook? Can I draw in that too, mama?” Hendricks was hesitant to share her beloved grown-up art supplies, but then her daughter slyly poked, “If you can’t share, we might have to take it away if you can’t share.”

What mother can resist her own child’s precocious charm? So Hendricks acquiesced, and she loved the results of their first collaboration, which is the first drawing below. Hendricks has graciously allowed me to share some of her previously unpublished collaborations with her daughter here, as well. They’re so terrific. Enjoy:
