Marvel Comics Creates New Superhero to Celebrate Boy with Hearing Aid

File this one in the Awesome drawer: artists at Marvel Comics became superheroes themselves by creating a new hero to encourage a young boy to wear his hearing aid.

4-year-old Anthony Smith has no right ear and suffers from hearing loss in his left as a result of a chromosomal disorder. Without a hearing aid, Anthony cannot hear at all. The stubborn little guy recently refused to wear his hearing aid because, he said, superheroes don’t wear hearing aids. So his distraught but clever mother, Christina D’allesandro, emailed Marvel Comics, explaining her son’s plight. The very next day, Marvel sent a comic book cover featuring a Marvel character named Hawkeye, who wears a hearing aid. They followed up by creating a character inspired by Anthony called The Blue Ear, the nickname Anthony and his mother gave to Anthony’s hearing aid.
